“The Letter” was originally conceived as part of a site-specific installation at the Historic House “El Zaguan” in Santa Fe, in 2008. In particular the living room, sparsely furnished was the source of inspiration of the animation used for the installation. Using collage and photo cutouts, I created a less than 2 min. animated loop that simulates an hand writing a love letter to somebody who previously lived in that space. Technically the animation has been created using paper cutouts, shot with a digital camera and composited in Adobe After Effects. A hidden projector on the ceiling did project a video loop of the animation onto a desk in the living room of “El Zaguan”.
Subsequently, “The Letter” became part of a permanent, but mobile installation project with the same name.
A portable lap desk of the Eighteen-century, originally used to keep paper, pen and ink becoming a support to write on while traveling, has been purchased, restored and adapted to contain a digital player. The installation conveys the concept of love for writing and for a writer. A miniature reproduction of the original cutouts is stored in the “secret drawers” of the lap desk.
